Captain's Log           by Paul Wadehra, Board President

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Great job by everyone at the Time Trials meet on Saturday. Swimmers came out and had many time improvements and we had EIGHT new Invitational Qualifiers, bringing our total eligible swimmers for that meet up to 58!.

We also had some Armada records broken or tied this week. Congratulations to Max Uribe breaking records in the Boys 6 and under 25 Free and 25 Back, and Tucker Lewis for tying the record in the Boys 15-17 50 free.

This week we have LOTS of things going on. We have

Pretty busy week for us!

Email me any time with questions at board@wbarmada.org. For complete team information, visit wellsbranch.swimtopia.com, and don't forget to check your folders regularly.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner           by Alex Fedorov, Head Coach

As expected, we did a fabulous job at our “time trials” meet. We had new Invitational qualifiers, several time improvements, and right now we are seeing a fabulous season…an exceptional season! As we approach the end of our season, we have two meets ahead of us: Divisionals (a team oriented meet) and Invitationals (an individually goaled meet.) Theses are separate meets with separate goals in mind. You cannot attend Invitationals if you have not participated in Divisionals.

As a team, every person counts at Divisionals. Again, EVERY PERSON COUNTS! I cannot stress this enough. As head coach, my goal is to win Divisionals. Of course, individual achievement is important to me as well, but I would like to keep our title for a THIRD year and we have some extremely tough competition! Steiner Ranch Blue is bringing heavy competition and depth. Steiner Ranch Blue is bringing far more swimmer than us. They bring exceptional talent, and this is the first time they are competing against us Divisionals. I want to remind EVERYONE, we lost to them at our first dual meet and they bring an EXTREMELY experienced coaching staff: which makes competition even tougher. Their coaching staff consists of elite level coaching, intelligence and depth. This will be a close meet and, again, EVERYONE counts! Please do not miss this meet! I believe we have a chance to defeat them but again, it will take a team effort. Again, everyone counts! Mindy, our Meet Director, has reopened divisionals for at 24 hour period per my request. Please get swimmers signed up. Again, everyone counts! I cannot stress this enough! This is not a dual meet, depth counts more than you can imagine!

Prior to the meet, please make sure your swimmer knows what relays they are swimming on at Divisionals. Again, this is a team meet, and as head coach my goal is to win this meet. I want to keep our team pride up, our title in hand, be the best team in our division and make dramatic improvements as a team.

This week we will be working on swimming finishes, meaning having swimmers get their hand on the wall as fast as possible…for both Divisional and Invitational. I will be hitting my assistant coaching staff hard on this! This is the final area I want to work on. I will be coaching on this heavily this week as we are in “rest” mode.

Parents, you have the most influence on your children (as a teacher, I know you don’t think so, but you do! Reinforce what I teach your child. Come to practice & watch and learn!) This week is the MOST critical week of practice. I cannot stress that enough. We have two BIG meets and ahead of us and I want to see our young swimmers perform optimally! This is the end of the year and should be the peak of performance…not dual meets! Our Final meet at University of Texas should be at optimal performance as this is one of the best competition pools in the world!

For our younger swimmers, Steiner Ranch will be a new pool: an unfamiliar environment. This may slow their race. Please continue to remind your younger swimmers: the pool is the same, the competition is the same, and with their dramatic improvements since the start of the season, they are better than their competition! This is an ELITE team! Please let them know, the scenery is different but the pool is not! It may be hard to swallow for them, but their pool is fast, and we will be too! Mentality in competition is everything! Keep them focused at the meet.

Divisionals is a tri-meet with many more swimmers. Swimmers should be focused on their events, not on their competition. I do not want to see swimmers coming off the blocks unsure of what they are swimming nor looking at their competition: these two are the biggest deterrents of time improvements. A swim is a solo event. Looking at competition does one of two things: (1) slows the swimmer due to hydrodynamics and (2) make the swimmer think “should I swim faster or can I relax:” both are counter-productive! This week I will be “fine-tuning” many aspects of competition from a head coach level. I will talk about this more in practice.

Expect dramatic changes in practice and early release for most swimmers. This is a week of rest. Expect swimmers to get out early from practice. Starts, turns, finishes, how to race is what our staff will addressed this week. Again, this will be a week of rest for our swimmers in preparation for the “Grand Finale.” Again, swimmers will be released early from practice. For our young swimmers (10 and under), this will start on Wednesday. Expect practice to end about 10 minutes early for each part (except practice #2).

Divisionals is a deep meet. Scoring is FAR different than a dual meet. Depth matters unlike a dual meet: every swimmer is important! Expect major time improvements at this meet as this is a “fine tuning” meet where times will drop and we will see many new Invitational Qualifiers: so expect to attend the meet at the University of Texas the next day, one of the fastest pools in the world!

Coaches Appreciation Day - Tuesday, July 3

Help us celebrate our coaches by making homemade cards and/or pictures. We will make a collage of the cards/pictures on posters for each coach.

Please place cards for the coaches in the family folder for Gavin by Saturday, June 30th. If you have any photos of swimmers (or coaches), you may include these with the card – or email them to: Charles.Yang@mckesson.com

The coaches’ favorite part of this day is not the breakfast as much as the great cards from the swimmers. Thank you for helping make this day a special day for our coaches!!!

Support Valyncia - buy "Valyncia Strong" bracelets

WBA swimmer Valyncia Nunn has been fighting serious, life-threatening illnesses for a number of years. This past year, she spent 10 months in the hospital - many of them in Houston.

We are fortunate that she is well-enough to swim with us this summer, but her battle continues and we are awed by her strength and her courage.

Show your support for Valyncia and her family by purchasing "Valynica Strong" bracelets at the swim shop during our home meets.

Every dollar you spend on the bracelets or donated will be given to the Nunn family to assist them in some of their expenses. You may also make addition donations.

Awards Night and 2012 Board Election      Thursday, July 5 - 7-8:30 pm

Make your plans to attend the annual Wells Branch Armada Awards Night. The big event will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Shoreline Drive from 7-8:30 pm on Thursday, July 5.

Each hard-working swimmer on the team has earned an award for being a part of the 2011 WBA Swim Team. Each swimmer will be recognized by name and brought up to the front of the room to receive their award.

We will award "high-point" awards for the top three point-earners in each age group and each gender. Swimmers who have set team records will receive an award. Swimmers with perfect attendance at every dual swim meet will receive an award. In addition, the coaches have other awards planned for hard-working swimmers.

Swimathon prizes will also be awarded.

There will be refreshments and a DVD presentation of the season.

There are many swimmers and we want each swimmer to be recognized. We ask that you talk to your swimmers ahead of time about the importance of sitting and listening during the ceremony. It does take some time to get through all the awards but each award is important.

Board elections will also be held. A slate of candidates will be presented and additional nominations will be accepted from the floor

Basket Raffle - at Award's Night Ceremony

Our annual award's night will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Thursday, July 5.

We will be selling raffle tickets at the beginning of the ceremony and will have the final drawing at the conclusion on the night. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Armada Team Spirit Night      Friday, July 6 - 5:00-7:00 pm

  • Creating WBA banners
  • Spirit Chants
  • Face Painting / Tattoos
  • Red, White, and Blue fingernail painting
  • Car decorating
  • and more

We will also have a Pasta Dinner, which will be free for swimmers and have a nominal charge for family members.

This event will take place at the Wells Branch Community Center, next to the Katherine Fleischer pool on Klattenhoff Dr. in Wells Branch, from 5:00pm-7:00pm on Friday, July 6.

Thank you to everyone who came out and volunteered and participated in our annual swimathon fundraiser. We appreciate your support.

At registration, each family has committed to get donations of at least $50. If you have not submitted your donation, please turn it in this week in the file folders, at award's night or at the meet Saturday.
