Captain's Log           by Paul Wadehra, Board President

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Great job by Armada swimmers in the meet with our neighbors from Round Rock. As usual we had lots of time improvements. 17 swimmers won at least one first place and we now have 48 swimmers who have qualified for the Invitational Meet.

It was also a week which saw many Armada records broken. Congratulations to Tucker Lewis and Demi Waworuntu for breaking two records each! And congratulations also to the Girls 11-12 medley AND relay teams, and the Boys 13-14 Medley relay team, for breaking those records as well! Nice job!

This week we are back home for a meet with the Tidal Waves from Block House Creek. Be sure to sign in to the Online Meet Entry (OME) by noon Monday and let us know if you are participating and your event and volunteer choices. Arrival time is 6:05 am See below in this newsletter for more details.

The theme this week is "Looney Tunes", come dressed as your favorite cartoon character.

We had a great time at swimathon despite the lack of music and weather uncertainty. Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Email me any time with questions at board@wbarmada.org. For complete team information, visit wellsbranch.swimtopia.com, and don't forget to check your folders regularly.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner           by Alex Fedorov, Head Coach

With our first away meet, I was excited to see the dramatic improvements we had at this meet. Our younger swimmers struggled a bit which I attribute to a new pool/environment. A change of environment to a young child will make swimming more difficult.

The pool we swam at this weekend was one of the fastest pools in Austin. Excluding backstroke (which the pool had extremely slippery bocks in the water), we saw a bunch of huge time improvements. I have seen changes in stroke technique which is exactly what I was looking for at this point in the season.

As we move into the latter parts of the season, we will not be looking to refine strokes for the purpose of speed. Practices will switch from more yard work to more sprint work to include shorter swimming and working on things such as starts, turns, and shorter sprints.

The Dolphins are an exceptional team with more swimmers and in a division that is stronger than ours. For us to swim as close as we did racing this team was extremely impressive. The competition resulted in several new team records and many new first-time invitational qualifiers: a goal I really wanted to see this early in the season.

We have many swimmers who are close to qualifying for invitationals. I would love to see our swimmers have the experience of going to invitationals. As we move into the last few meets, this will be our team goal as I want to focus on individual goals: team records and invitational qualifications.

Finally, I want to continue to urge swimmers to keep staying in the pool. Parents, keep your kids in the pool to play as much as possible. Sign-up for stroke clinics, and I will be offering additional stroke clinics outside of the normal times through my website: www.learn2swimfast.com. These clinics will be offered ONLY as an overflow to current clinic provided through the Armada Swim Team. I will be adding instructional videos so please visit the site.

Great meet this weekend Armada. This was by far the best meet I have seen this year. Congratulations to our new team record holders and invitational qualifiers.

Again, please take time to thank our dedicated board members. They are doing an exceptional job!

Coach Alex

Volunteer Spot            by Jeannie Boylan, Volunteer Coordinator

Hi Parents,

Only one more "regular" meet to go. We're in the homestretch. If you were unable to sign up for a volunteer position for the Tidal Waves meet, please send me an email. You cannot see all positions available, so I'm sure to need your help somewhere.

Thanks again for a well-done meet at Round Rock. Even with all the scratches, we were able to manage due to everyone who pitched in with extra help. THANK YOU!

Jeannie Boylan
WB Armada Volunteer Coordinator

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 22 at 8 pm
Meet setup will start at 8 pm for this meet. We must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.

The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.

Clean Up
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. the more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

Parking

At a home meet, Armada families park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.
Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

 "Fast Fishy" Winners

Each week the WBA honors the swimmers in each age group that record the largest time improvement. In swimming, the goal is to try to beat yourself each week by recording a personal best.

These swimmers will receive a special "Fast Fishy" cap from the coaches.

WBA Concession Stand and Donation Schedule

Concession Stand: The concession stand normally accepts cash only. However, they will be selling $10 "cash cards" that can be purchased by check.

This year, our concession menu is being expanded. They will be cooking breakfast tacos on site and have added turkey wraps and chicken tacos to the lunch menu.. They will also have pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, sausage wraps, hamburgers and cheese burgers. YUM!

Donations: We ask that parents make a donation of homemade baked goods or cut-up fruit to the concession stand for sale during our home swim meets. Some ideas are muffins, cookies, and fruit that is cut up and placed in containers such as plastic cups with clear wrap on top. Please remember it will be hot outside and you don't want to donate anything that will melt - like chocolate chips, frosting, etc.

July 4 Wells Branch Parade All Ages: Bring Candy to Throw

Support Valyncia - buy "Valyncia Strong" bracelets

WBA swimmer Valyncia Nunn has been fighting serious, life-threatening illnesses for a number of years. This past year, she spent 10 months in the hospital - many of them in Houston.

We are fortunate that she is well-enough to swim with us this summer, but her battle continues and we are awed by her strength and her courage.

Show your support for Valyncia and her family by purchasing "Valynica Strong" bracelets at the swim shop during our home meets.

Every dollar you spend on the bracelets or donated will be given to the Nunn family to assist them in some of their expenses. You may also make addition donations.

WBA Team Awards Night - Thursday, July 5   -    Raffle

Our annual award's night will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Thursday, July 5.

Each swimmer on the team will be recognized with an award. Addtionally, swimmers will be recognized for perfect attendance at meets, the age group high-point winners, record breakers, coach's choice and most improved in each age group.

We will be selling raffle tickets at the beginning of the ceremony and will have the final drawing at the conclusion on the night. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

  • Basket 1 : Night on the Town
  • Basket 2: Colt McCoy signed UT Football
  • Basket 3: XBox 360

Please contact Mary Hale with questions.

Swimathon:   Money donations are due Friday, June 29

Thank you to everyone who came out and volunteered and participated in our annual swimathon fundraiser. We appreciate your support.

Swimmers have received donation envelopes in their family folders this week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. This fundraiser keeps us from having to raise registration prices significantly. Each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

Winners of Silent Auction items are being notified. Please contact Mary Hale with questions.

WBA Scholarships: Two winners will be chosen

This season, the Wells Branch Armada board voted to begin awarding two annual scholarships to swimmers who apply in their "age-out" year.

Scholarship forms have been distributed to the five eligible swimmers and complete applications are due no later than Monday, May 25, Questions? Please email board@wbarmada.org

 Practice Times

We have assigned each swimmer to a specific practice time. Schedules were emailed to each family. Swimmers must swim at their appointed time.

If you have a question about your practice time or did not receive the schedule, please email Paul Wadehra.

Friday June 1 - Monday, July 9:    Practices are held Monday - Friday
Practice 1 7:15 - 8:35 am
Practice 2 8:25- 9:10 am
Practice 3 9:05-9:55
Practice 4 9:50 - 10:45 am
Practice 5 10:40 - 11:35 am

Rain/Bad Weather:
In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

Swim Team Night at RR Express Baseball - Wed, June 20

 Swim Meet Tips and Checklist

Here are a few important tips to make your swim meet experience successful:

tips Be on time. At the beginning of the meet the coaches will make changes to relay events if there are swimmers that are absent or missing. It is important that swimmers check-in with their pit parent to avoid being scratched from any relay event.
tips Bring nutritious snacks. The swim meets begin very early in the morning and last until noon or later. Please pack healthy snacks for your swimmers to eat such as, fresh fruit, bagels, crackers, water, sports drinks etc. We make an attempt to offer healthy items at the concession stand.
tips Pack appropriate supplies.Towels, sunscreen, goggles, etc - See checklist below...
tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!
