Captain's Log           by Paul Wadehra, Board President

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Congratulations to Armada swimmers for our first victory of the season against Divisional opponent Pflugerville. We had great time improvements - lots of those red, white and blue ribbons will be in folders this week. Twenty-nine swimmers won at least one first place and we already have 34 swimmers who are Invitational Meet qualifiers.

We have another home meet this week - swimming against the Forest North Stingrays. Be sure to sign in to the OME by noon Monday and let us know if you are participating and your event and volunteer choices. Arrival time is 6:05 am See below in this newsletter for more details.

The theme this week is "Flashback". Dress in your favorite decade, 50's 60's 80's, etc

Deadline for purchasing tickets for Swim Team Night at the RR Express is Friday June 8. See below

We are gearing up for our annual Swimathon fundraiser. Read all about it here.

Email me any time with questions at board@wbarmada.org. For complete team information, visit wellsbranch.swimtopia.com, and don't forget to check your folders regularaly.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner           by Alex Fedorov, Head Coach

"I would like to congratulate the entire Armada Swim Team for a well swum meet. I am proud to be the leader of a team that showed so much strength and improvement in competition. I could see the hard work of many young swimmers really paying off. Strokes are starting to come together and I am seeing the fire in the eyes of many swimmers. I would like to thank our amazing coaching staff for the tremendous work they have done and give special thanks to my counterpart, Gina, for doing a fantastic job with our little ones. Her experience is really paying off and we are starting to see it early in the season.

For this meet, as the head coach, I modified swimming events for the purpose of defeating Pflugerville-a team that came very close to defeating us last year at Divisionals. I also needed, as a new coach to our team, to be able to compete and analyze our team early as a prelude to Divisionals. For this reason, I treated this meet as a team meet.

I know a few swimmers were disappointed about the events they were switched to. As the Head Coach, it is my job to do what is best for the Armada Swim Team as a whole. I also wanted to see how our swimmers would respond to a "negative" change. For that reason, I refrained from announcing my changes prior to making them. I wanted to do this early so that I could give individual performance more attention at the latter meets. Swimmers, I was impressed. We won by almost 200 points.

That being said, I am very aware of individual achievement. I do realize we also have many individual goals. As such, from this point forward (until Divisionals), I want to allow swimmers to select which ever event they choose at all dual or time trial meets with one consideration: I will require all swimmers to swim each event at least once, and preferably twice. As a coach, I want to see all swimmers compete in all strokes so I can determine talent and make recommendations. Until Divisionals-our goal-as a team, will be individual based because I want each swimmer to attain their personal goals.

With consideration to what I have stated, I want to stress our team goal: Divisionals. Our team's big meet is Divisionals. Any individual goals must be attained prior to Divisionals as I will have our TEAM a priority and this meet will involve my decision making.

With Divisionals approaching in about one month, I would like to stress a very important point: Divisionals is much different than a dual meet. First of all, this will be a team meet and as such depth and swimmer selection for next year will play a factor as I look for team focused families. As a team, our goal is to win. Secondly, depth of a team is extremely important. Unlike a dual meets where only the top 3 swimmers are scored, at Divisionals the top 8 places are scored. This makes depth extremely critical. If you honor your team, I ask everyone to please attend this meet.

I have seen many HUGE time improvements at this meet and believe in many young up and coming stars. Now that school is finally over, I must emphasize the following: HAVE YOUR CHILDREN PLAY IN THE POOL AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Get them acclimated to the water. This makes a huge difference in the competition. The more they play in the pool, the more acclimated they become in the environment. I cannot stress this enough! AGAIN, I CANNOT STESS THIS ENOUGH!

Finally, I want to give a big round of applause to our Board. These members work tirelessly to bring our team, our meets and the whole process together. Many do not realize just how much time and effort goes into our team. Please take time to thank them in person. Unlike me, they work for no monetary compensation. They are awesome! I would like to personally thank our amazing board. I have been told this board is the best in the circuit and what they do is truly amazing!

Coach Alex"

Hi Parents!
What a great meet on Saturday! In spite of the problems we encountered with the sound system, our very capable Ready Bench Team, lead by Jennfong Wu, stepped in and kept things running smoothly so the meet was not slowed down any more than necessary. A BIG THANKS TO THE READY BENCH TEAM!!!

And thanks to all of the parents who continue to step in where needed and do all of the things necessary to run a successful meet. I really appreciate each and every one of you!

Looking forward to Forest North next week!

Morning practice started Friday, June 1

We have assigned each swimmer to a specific practice time. Schedules were emailed to each family. Swimmers must swim at their appointed time.

If you have a question about your practice time or did not receive the schedule, please email Paul Wadehra.

Friday June 1 - Monday, July 9:    Practices are held Monday - Friday

Rain/Bad Weather:
In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

Meet Set-up
Friday, June 8 at 8 pm
Meet setup will start at 8 pm for this meet. We must move all tables and chairs and put out ready benches, ropes and the announcer tables. If you signed up as part of the setup team for your volunteer assignment, or if you'd like to lend an extra hand, please be at the pool then.
The morning of the meet, we need help setting up pop-up tents around the pool. We appreciate all the help we can get putting these tents up and taking them down at the end of the day.
Clean Up
We ask everyone to clean up the pit and pool areas before they leave. We must return the pool area to its original condition. the more people who help, the sooner everyone can leave. Pit parents should not release swimmers until their area is restored.

At a home meet, Armada families park in the unpaved lot across the street from the pool, leaving the lot adjacent to the pool for our guest team. Please follow instructions from the parking attendants for everyone's safety. Drive slowly and watch for people crossing the street.
Please respect the "no parking" signs where posted.

WBA Concession Stand and Donation Schedule

Concession Stand: The concession stand normally accepts cash only. However, they will be selling $10 "cash cards" that can be purchased by check.

This year, our concession menu is being expanded. They will be cooking breakfast tacos on site and have added turkey wraps and chicken tacos to the lunch menu.. They will also have pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, sausage wraps, hamburgers and cheese burgers. YUM!

Donations: We ask that parents make a donation of homemade baked goods or cut-up fruit to the concession stand for sale during our home swim meets. Some ideas are muffins, cookies, and fruit that is cut up and placed in containers such as plastic cups with clear wrap on top. Please remember it will be hot outside and you don't want to donate anything that will melt - like chocolate chips, frosting, etc.

Support Valyncia - buy "Valyncia Strong" bracelets

WBA swimmer Valyncia Nunn has been fighting serious, life-threatening illnesses for a number of years. This past year, she spent 10 months in the hospital - many of them in Houston.

We are fortunate that she is well-enough to swim with us this summer, but her battle continues and we are awed by her strength and her courage.

Show your support for Valyncia and her family by purchasing "Valynica Strong" bracelets at the swim shop during our home meets.

Every dollar you spend on the bracelets or donated will be given to the Nunn family to assist them in some of their expenses. You may also make addition donations.

Swimathon:   PARTY TIME is 6 to 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 12

Our annual Swimathon & Silent Auction will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm, Tuesday, June 12. This is our primary fundraiser and a huge party for our swimmers and families.

Swimmers will receive donation envelopes in their family folders this week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. This fundraiser keeps us from having to raise registration prices significantly. Each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

During the Swim-a-thon, swimmers will be swimming laps and parents will bring chairs and sit by the pool to count your swimmer's laps. On team members are allowed in the pool. Each team member will be entered in drawings for great door prizes - and there is one for everyone!. We will also have special prizes you can purchase raffle tickets for.

We will offer free food and drinks for all family members. Sno-cones, popcorn, hot dogs and we usually are able to offer some "higher-end" food also. No charge for any of this!

Parents are encouraged to visit our Silent Auction tables. We have restaurant certificates, tickets to local attractions, items donated by local businesses and a Big Green Egg BBQ!

Swim-a-thon:   Donations are needed for silent auction

Our annual Swim-a-thon & Silent Auction will be held Tuesday, June12. This is our primary fundraiser for the year and the funds raised help us keep our registration fees low and help us purchase needed equipment.

We are asking for donations of goods or services or gift certificates that we can auction off during the event. We are a registered 501c3 non-profit organization and donations are tax decuctible.

Please contact Mary Hale at 789-3903 or email her at mjhale@austin.rr.com. She has letters you can distribute to area businesses.

WBA Scholarships: Two winners will be chosen

This season, the Wells Branch Armada board voted to begin awarding two annual scholarships to swimmers who apply in their "age-out" year.

A scholarship committee will review applications. No senior parent will serve on the committee and we would like non-board members to volunteer. If you would like to serve on the committee, please email board@wbarmada.org

Applications will go out to eligible swimmers this week.

Swim Team Night at RR Express Baseball - Wed, June 20

Deadline to order is Friday, June 8 - please place in the RR Express folder in filebox.

Each season, the Round Rock Express Baseball Team honors local swimmers at "Swim Team Night".

They offer all swimmers in the area half-price tickets and give host a pre-game parade around the field.

We purchase the tickets as a team so that those that choose to sit in the reserved seats can all sit together. Other options than many choose are the Home Run Porch or the lawn seating. If you know your (older) swimmer is going to wander around the whole game, the lawn seating ticket is a great option for $3!

Swimmers wanting to participate in the parade should line up under the jumbotron at 6 p.m. - Otherwise, the game start at 7:05 pm

Order forms have been placed in your family folder. There are extra in the board/coaches filebox. Please respond with payment by Friday, June 8.

 WBA Swim Shop

The Swim Shop will be open during swim meets.

tips Swimmers should stay in their pit areas The Pit Parents are responsible for watching the swimmers in the pit area and getting them to the ready bench when it is time for their event. If your child is going somewhere with you, please let the pit parents know.
tips MARK EVERYTHING! Please write your child's name on ALL belongings. At the meet, you will be dozens of identical t-shirts, caps, goggles - plus similar towels, flip flips, sunscreen. Don't forget to mark any electronic games - they get mixed up!
