Captain's Log           by Paul Wadehra, Board President

Hi Parents & Swimmers,

Outstanding meet this weekend with the Tidal Waves. We won the meet, but what really stands out are the whopping 171 time improvements! In addition, we saw a number of new Invitational Qualifiers, bringing our total eligible swimmers for that meet up to 50!.

It was also a week which saw long standing Armada records fall. Congratulations to Efaine Chang for shattering a 20 year old record in the Girls 15-17 breast stroke, Demi Waworuntu breaking a 12 year old record in the Girls 9-10 25 butterfly, and the Girls 9-10 relay team for setting a new Freestyle Relay record.

This week we have a special meet, the WBA "Time Trial" meet, with our team only, and it is an opportunity for swimmers to come and try to improve their times. All swimmers are encouraged to participate in this meet, including 6-and-unders who need help getting across the pool. Be sure to sign in to the Online Meet Entry (OME) by 9 pm Tuesday and let us know if you are participating and your event and volunteer choices. Arrival time is 6:35 am. See below in this newsletter for more details.

The theme this week is Team USA! Show your Olympic spirit as the fastest swimmers in the country are in Omaha at Olympic Trials.

Email me any time with questions at board@wbarmada.org. For complete team information, visit wellsbranch.swimtopia.com, and don't forget to check your folders regularly.

See you at the pool!

Coach's Corner           by Alex Fedorov, Head Coach

We had another fantastic weekend where we saw old records broken, new invitational qualifiers and many significant time drops. Great jobs swimmers, over all we had another fantastic meet. I was proud to see our young swimmers do so well.

With the conclusion of the Tidal Wave’s meet, we are now in preparation mode for Divisionals and Invitationals. This weekend is our time trials meet, the last meet prior to the two post-season meets.

I anticipate many fast swims this weekend as we are seeing dramatic improvements on a weekly basis.

Coach Alex

Congratulations on another fine meet. We pulled it together with everyone's help and I speak for the entire Board when I say we appreciate you very much.

One note… I'm running out of name tags. If you have some lying around that you forgot to turn in, please put them in my folder at the pool. Many thanks.

Coaches Appreciation Day - Tuesday, July 3

Help us celebrate our coaches by making homemade cards and/or pictures. We will make a collage of the cards/pictures on posters for each coach.

Please place cards for the coaches in the family folder for Gavin by Saturday, June 30th. If you have any photos of swimmers (or coaches), you may include these with the card – or email them to: Charles.Yang@mckesson.com

The coaches’ favorite part of this day is not the breakfast as much as the great cards from the swimmers. Thank you for helping make this day a special day for our coaches!!!

WBA Concession Stand and Donation Schedule

Concession Stand: The concession stand normally accepts cash only. However, they will be selling $10 "cash cards" that can be purchased by check.

This year, our concession menu is being expanded. They will be cooking breakfast tacos on site and have added turkey wraps and chicken tacos to the lunch menu.. They will also have pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, sausage wraps, hamburgers and cheese burgers. YUM!

Donations: We ask that parents make a donation of homemade baked goods or cut-up fruit to the concession stand for sale during our home swim meets. Some ideas are muffins, cookies, and fruit that is cut up and placed in containers such as plastic cups with clear wrap on top. Please remember it will be hot outside and you don't want to donate anything that will melt - like chocolate chips, frosting, etc.

June 30 Time Trials 13-14
July 4 Wells Branch Parade All Ages: Bring Candy to Throw

Support Valyncia - buy "Valyncia Strong" bracelets

WBA swimmer Valyncia Nunn has been fighting serious, life-threatening illnesses for a number of years. This past year, she spent 10 months in the hospital - many of them in Houston.

We are fortunate that she is well-enough to swim with us this summer, but her battle continues and we are awed by her strength and her courage.

Show your support for Valyncia and her family by purchasing "Valynica Strong" bracelets at the swim shop during our home meets.

Every dollar you spend on the bracelets or donated will be given to the Nunn family to assist them in some of their expenses. You may also make addition donations.

WBA Team Awards Night - Thursday, July 5   -    Raffle

Our annual award's night will be held at the Wells Branch Recreation Center on Thursday, July 5.

Each swimmer on the team will be recognized with an award. Addtionally, swimmers will be recognized for perfect attendance at meets, the age group high-point winners, record breakers, coach's choice and most improved in each age group.

We will be selling raffle tickets at the beginning of the ceremony and will have the final drawing at the conclusion on the night. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

  • Basket 1 : Night on the Town
  • Basket 2: Colt McCoy signed UT Football
  • Basket 3: XBox 360

Please contact Mary Hale with questions.

Swimathon:   Money donations are due Friday, June 29

Thank you to everyone who came out and volunteered and participated in our annual swimathon fundraiser. We appreciate your support.

Swimmers have received donation envelopes in their family folders this week. We ask that each swimmer collect pledges per length of the pool or flat donations. This fundraiser keeps us from having to raise registration prices significantly. Each family has committed to get donations of at least $50.

Winners of Silent Auction items are being notified. Please contact Mary Hale with questions.

WBA Scholarships: Deadline is Monday - May 25

This season, the Wells Branch Armada board voted to begin awarding two annual scholarships to swimmers who apply in their "age-out" year.

Scholarship forms have been distributed to the five eligible swimmers and complete applications are due no later than Monday, May 25, Questions? Please email board@wbarmada.org

Rain/Bad Weather:
In case of weather changes, please have a back-up plan for your swimmer (bike riders, walkers, etc). Everyone must be out of the water during a thunderstorm and if lightning is seen. Swim practice may continue if it is only raining and the coaches feel practice will be beneficial. If in doubt, you can call the pool and ask the lifeguard if swim practice is on. If the weather changes quickly, and the swimmers must get out of the pool, a coach will remain with them until everyone is picked up. The telephone number to the pool office is 512-310-1833.

The Swim Shop will be open during swim meets.
